Laos-China catalyse science, technology cooperation on one belt, one road

Science and technology representatives from Laos and Guangxi of China met in Vientiane to discuss the strengthening of cooperation networks aiming to develop the sector between both nations.

The cooperation aimed to enhance coordination and mutual support in implementing projects and provide a scientific basis for strengthening friendship and comprehensive cooperation between both countries on the one belt one road initiative, according to a leading official.

Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Chanseng Phimmavong made the remarks on Saturday at the Laos-China Technology Innovation Meeting 2018 held as part of the ongoing Lao Techmart Exhibition in Vientiane.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Director General of the Department of Science and Technology Guangxi, China, Mr Liu Jianhong along with officials from both sides.

Dr Chanseng said the forum aimed to discuss and exchange ideas and cooperation on science and technology between the two countries in order to devise attainable goals, projects, and strategic plans. At the meeting, entrepreneurs, investors, researchers of the two countries had the opportunity to gain an understanding of science and technology policies and how they relate to other sectors as well as team up with cooperation partners from different bodies attending the forum, he said.  

“The ministry has cooperated with regional and international bodies to assist with funding and personnel exchanges in science as Laos lacks expertise compared with neighbouring countries,” he added.

The government was supporting the private sector to encourage investment in the sector as part of the Science and Technology Development Strategy to 2025 and Vision to 2030 consistent with the 8th five-year National Socio-Economic Development Plan as science, technology and innovation was a driving force to achieve development goals by 2020, he added.    

According to the ministry, the government has placed a high priority on developing its human resources in the science sector.

The ministry’s strategy focuses on developing scientific and technological thought and innovation, the development of human resources, and the building of science and technology centres in rural areas.
